Fire Control Specialist

SALARY: $23,524 - $33,092

 

 

 

Performs Responsible protective work in fire control, rescue and fire prevention operations; does related  work as required. Work is often performed under  emergency conditions and frequently involves  considerable personal hazard.  Work is performed  under immediate supervision.

Typical Tasks: As a member of a team, responds to  fire alarms and  participates in the control and  suppression of fires; Participates in rescue  operations at fire scenes or accident scenes; Renders first aid and  assists  other agencies in emergencies; Participates in fire prevention inspections;  Engages in continuous training  and physical fitness programs; Helps with station, equipment, and grounds maintenance; Participates in  salvage  operations and identification of fire causes; Preserves evidence of possible arson and circumstances causing  medical  emergencies; Conducts periodical inspections and tests of firefighting, rescue and first aid equipment,  apparatus and fire hydrants;  Conducts classes and presentations for fire personnel and public groups; Performs  related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  General knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures as applied to  fire suppression; General  knowledge of fire prevention strategies and techniques; some knowledge of emergency  medical techniques and procedures; Ability to  learn technical firefighting principles and techniques and  principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression; General knowledge of the  street system and physical payout  of  the City; Ability to perform hazardous work under adverse conditions; Ability to understand and  follow oral and  written instructions; Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees and the  public;  Ability to maintain mental alertness during extended periods of work; Possession of medical aptitude;  Physical endurance and agility.

Education and Experience:  Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high  school and some  experience in the operation or routine maintenance of mechanical equipment.

Special Requirements: Possess an appropriate driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina. Satisfactory completion of  departmental certification program for the position. Must pass pre-placement medical examination to include drug screen and  psychological examination. Background investigation will include check of credit history, driving record and criminal history.  Must  live within a 50-mile radius of the City of Kinston.
