| Who Are Sentinels?
The Sentinel Program is a volunteer organization serving within the Kinston Department of Public Safety. The men and women in its ranks are at least 18 years of age and come from all walks of life. Back to top The members of this program assist the Kinston Department of Public Safety with a variety of duties which do not place them in danger. The Sentinel program provides a positive opportunity for citizens to actively help their community, and assist the Department in providing valuable services. These services range from funeral escorts and residence checks to public assists. Sentinel members may work; in the training division, in property & identification, and in the patrol division. The Sentinel program is not a stepping stone to becoming a police
officer. Our best Sentinels are individuals who have secure
employment. They just want to be part of the solution, not part of the
problem. "Citizens in Service to the Community" is the
motto of the Sentinel Program, and this is proudly displayed with a
patch on the Sentinel uniform. The Kinston Department of Public Safety is proud of our valuable
Sentinels. Interested volunteers must complete an extensive process including a full background check, have a valid North Carolina drivers license and complete several hours of basic training. The successful candidate will be required to protect the confidentiality of sensitive materials and situations that occasionally occur. An oral review board will rate and recommend candidates to the Director. Back to top Sentinel training will
be administered by the training section of the Kinston Department of
Public Safety covering areas of:
The Sentinels patrol city areas in a marked Sentinel vehicle, and provide positive, social interaction with our citizens. Back to top Our Sentinels provide a positive role-model for our citizens. By joining hands with our fellow citizens and law enforcement agencies we can greatly enhance public safety and awareness. Sentinels raise the quality of service and communication for the citizens of Kinston. Back to top We are looking for concerned citizens who are willing to volunteer their time and become an integral part of their community. Back to top For more information, please contact: Commander
