  Bill Johnson
Director of Public Safety

Director Johnson joined the Kinston Fire Department in September of 1986 as an entry level firefighter. He was promoted to Fire Captain in June of 1988 and subsequently to Fire Commander in 1992. In 1994, he was promoted to Assistant Fire Chief. In 2004, he attended Basic Law Enforcement Training at Lenoir Community College and was duly sworn as a law enforcement officer in 2005. In June of 2010, Chief Johnson was appointed as the Director of Public Safety with responsibility for Fire & Rescue, Police, and Code Enforcement services for the City of Kinston.

Director Johnson holds an Associates in Applied Science in Business Administration and is an Executive Fire Officer. He is also a member Phi Theta Kappa of community colleges.
     
  Marilyn Dunk
Administrative Manager I

Marilyn began her career with the City of Kinston in 1986 as a Secretary in the Finance Department and in 1994 transferred to the Fire Department. In 2003, the Fire and Police Departments merged into Public Safety where she was promoted to Administrative Manager I.

She has attended Essex College of Business (Newark, NJ) and Lenoir Community College taking various business courses.
     
  Don Crawford
Assistant Chief Fire&Rescue/Code Enforcement

Assistant Chief Crawford began his career with the Department in December 1986. During his tenure he has served as Personnel Development and Safety Commander, Shift Commander and Recruitment/Accreditation Manager. Chief Crawford graduated from Basic Law Enforcement Training in 2003 and is a sworn Law Enforcement Officer with the Department. As Assistant Chief of Fire/Rescue, Chief Crawford manages the Department’s Fire and Rescue Division and the Code Enforcement/Building Inspections Division.

Chief Crawford graduated from Coastal Carolina Community College with an Associate in Fire Protection Technology.
     
  Greg Thompson
Major, Criminal Investigation Division

Major Thompson began his career with the Kinston Police Department in November 1988, as a Patrol Officer assigned to the Patrol Division. In May 1990, he was assigned as an Investigator in the Crime Scene Unit. During his time in the Crime Scene Unit, he was accepted and recognized as an Expert Witness in the field of Fingerprints by the North Carolina Superior Courts and the Federal Courts of the United States. He has been assigned to various positions and ranks within the department since 1988, including Criminal Investigator, Sergeant - Crime Scene Unit, Lieutenant - Criminal Investigations, Commander - Criminal Investigations, Commander - Patrol Shift, and currently Major - Investigations Division.
     
 

Rick Harrell
Major, Patrol Operations Division

Major Harrell began his career with the Kinston Police Department in 1987.  During the course of his tenure he has achieved success in various sections of the agency in functions related to the Patrol / Traffic Division and Crime Scene Investigations as an investigator.  Supervisory positions have included Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Commander as he has served in divisions of Patrol, Investigations, Special Response, and Internal Affairs.  He has completed management courses through North Carolina State University as well as the Management Development Program from the North Carolina Justice Academy.  He has completed Business and Management courses through Lenoir Community College.  In addition to his regularly assigned duties from 1992 to 2009, Rick served as a SWAT Tactical Officer for the Kinston Department of Public Safety.
